Hello Immigrant Reporter
TORONTO: Leaving India and China behind, the Philippines has become the top source of immigrants for Canada.
In 2014, Canada admitted 40,000 permanent residents from the Philippines – up 30 percent from 2013.
In total, Canada admitted over 260,000 immigrants in 2014
There are now over 700,000 Filipinos in Canada, making them one of the largest immigrant groups, along with the Chinese, Indians and the Muslims.
“Filipinos fill lots of positions such as caregivers which other immigrants don’t. That’s why there is more and more preference for Filipino immigrants by Canada,’’ says an immigrant consultant who requests anonymity.
Another reason for more immigration from the Philippines is that the government is reducing immigration from the Middle East and other places.
Canada is expected to admit 285,000 new immigrants in 2015. And the numbers of Filipinos are going to be even higher as Canada would welcome 30,000 immigrants in the caregiver category in 2015. (From www.newseastwest.com)
